I’m not ready to offer another post of my own today, but I do want to share a blog post by a friend in Texas who has some thoughts about how we should be thinking about and responding to the current crisis, as well as some excellent suggestions for information sources.
I myself am inclined to advocate a somewhat narrower range of responses that I think are the most likely to be timely right now–providing financial support for the organizations that will be fighting the Trump Administration in court on various fronts, donating and volunteering for organizations that provide personal aid for those harmed by Trump or Trumpian policies, pressing the media to be more forthright in calling out Administration actions (and offering them praise when they do!) If you are represented by a Senator or House member who is potentially a swing vote on any important issue or appointment coming up to Congress then I think writing to or calling those representatives is also of the utmost importance. (I’m inclined to think this is less worthwhile if those who represent you are certain to vote the right way in any event OR are certain to vote the wrong way.) Some other steps may be more timely when Congressional or State elections are closer and persuadable voters are more likely to be paying attention. Having said that, I think it is valuable for all of us who are fearful of what may lie ahead for America to share our ideas about how best to respond.

“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” (JRR Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings)
